For millennia there has been the need to learn times tables. Ian Stewart of the University of Warwick says that ancient civilizations used them including the Babylonians who put them on clay tablets. As we have know about times tables for so long surely by now a way has been found to make learning them enjoyable for children. One fantastic thing about the times tables is the patterns that can be seen in them. These number patterns can help to motivate your children to learn the times tables because they make them more interesting. Here are three examples that Ian Stewart highlights in an article he wrote in early 2010; The ten times tables pattern; All you have to do is add a zero to each number from one to twelve and you have the answer to the ten times tables from one to twelve. A very simple pattern. How about the nine times tables? Any patterns there? Yes. Look at the answers to the nine times tables from one times to ten times - 9, 18, 27, 36, 45, 54, 63, 72, 81, 90. Can you see how the last number in the answer descends? 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, 0, Do you see it in the answers above. A last example, lets take the 5 times table.I'll bet most of you know the answers to the 5 times tables from 1 to 10. They are; 5,10,15,20,25,30,35,40,45,50. Two different patterns can be seen when you look. First, when you take the last number of each answer you get; 5,0,5,0,5,0,5,0,5,0. Second, when you take the first number from each of the 5 times tables answers you get; of 0, 1, 1, 2, 2, 3, 3, 4, 4, 5. Many patterns can be seen across the range of the times tables that children have to learn for school and they help make them more fun to learn. I think your children are more likely to love learning the tables when they know about these number patterns. One thing, please remember that the patterns will not be enough on their own to learn the times tables. You need something else. What though? Well, it may be that whn you were at school that you had to learn the times tables by rote. Constant repeating the tables, over and over again. How boring for you and how boring for your children if they had to do this. One thing you can do is to get on the net and see all the methods available, loads and loads. But what works and what doesn't? Which of all the techniques should you steer your children towards using so that they can tell you the answer to any times table in an instant, a slit second, straight away without having to think? Well, there is a fantastic way for your children to learn the times tables that makes it very easy to remember them. What your children need is a system which uses images, questions and location to make the times tables easily memorable. These factors make a massive difference to your children's ability to recall the times tables easily and well. For more information on times tables, goto www.timestablesmaths.com.
